GOM - the Global Overlay Mapping System
Antarctica - Special Use of Overlays.
Besides the use of a Polar Stereographic projection in the Antarctica map, there are a number of other differences between it and any of the other maps present in the Global Overlay Mapping System. They are listed below:
- Relief: A different color set is used for the Antarctic relief overlay, so the color-key shown on the Relief page does not apply here.
- Cities: As there are no cities in the Antarctic, this overlay has been used to show the names of Antarctic and Sub-Antarctic Bases, followed by a one or two-letter abbreviation taken from the Amateur Radio prefix-series, indicating which country the base belongs to.
- Sub-Antarctic islands off the coverage of the map are indicated at the map edge, along with their correct latitude and direction. Note that placing your cursor on these labels does not give the correct positional or bearing information on the Status Bar.
- Status Bar: With increasing scale, the information shown on the Status Bar becomes more accurate the further away from the centre you are.
- Scale Bar: No scale bar is available for this map, due to the projection used. A pop-up message appears in place of the Scale Bar, if you try to turn it on. You can drag the message around, if you have nothing better to do.
