GOM - the Global Overlay Mapping System
Installation
Depending on the way you purchase the Global Overlay Mapping System, the software and other files will arrive as either as downloaded Zip files or on a CD. Either way, installation on your computer is very simple. The only requirement is a copy of WinZip or a similar program, to un-zip the files. The installation process is completely non-invasive. All it does is to move files to the new location. No changes are made to the Registry or any other System Settings.
Downloaded Files
During the purchase-dialog, you will have chosen to download the Global Overlay Mapping System as either one large file, or a number of smaller ones. The procedure for installation of either option is the same. Create a new folder anywhere on your computer. Start the Winzip program, click on 'Open', and browse to the downloaded file(s). Click 'OK' to select it, then click 'Extract'. Enter the name, or browse to, your newly created folder in the 'Extract to' box. Select the 'All Files' and 'Use folder names' options. (The folder-names option is absolutely required for the program to work.) Click 'Extract', and WinZip does the rest for you. If you have multiple files to un-zip, repeat the above procedure, keeping the same folder-name in the 'Extract to' box for each one. Close the Winzip program, and then by using either 'My Computer' or 'Windows Explorer', browse to the new folder, where you will see a number of folders, files, and web pages. Find a page called 'Global Overlay Mapper.html' and create a shortcut to it, which you can then move to your Desktop or Program Menu (C:\WINDOWS\Start Menu\Programs). To start the Global Overlay Mapping System, click on the shortcut.
CD Version
The Global Overlay Mapping System can be run from the CD, or it can be installed on your computer. The advantage of running it from the CD is that no space is taken on your hard drive. The disadvantages of running it from the CD are that access time will be slower, and it will not be possible to add any updates or location changes. For these reasons, it is generally preferable to install the files on your hard drive. To do this, you will need to create a new folder anywhere on your computer. Copy all of the files on the CD to this new folder, without changing any of their relative locations or folder names. Find a page in your new folder called 'Global Overlay Mapper.html' and create a shortcut to it, which you can then move to your Desktop or Program Menu (C:\WINDOWS\Start Menu\Programs).
If you wish to start the Global Overlay Mapping System from the CD without installing it, simply navigate to, and click on, the page called 'Global Overlay Mapper.html'.
