Weather

When you have a connection to the Internet, the 'Weather' menu provides easy access to some useful weather-related resources. To use it, establish your Internet connection in the usual way, then click 'Tools' > ''. A new menu box will show a variety of links to various useful pages; clicking on any one will open a new browser for the information to be displayed.

Whilst some of these links are self-contained, and don't require any previously-selected program resources, other ones compare positional information before use, and thus require one or more Map-Pins to be selected before use. They are explained below:

Weather Radars - This powerful tool provides access to the latest weather images from US and Canadian doppler radar sites. To start it, make sure that you have one or more Map-Pins selected, then click 'Weather Radars'. A new tool box will open, with a line of colored spots, one for each Map-Pin currently selected. Click on one of the spots, and the tool will search a database of doppler radar sites, returning the 5 closest to the pin-position, in order of distance. The table also shows the Distance from the chosen Map-Pin, the Callsign, Name, and Radar Position. To the left of each entry is a small icon : plane icon Clicking on this will open a new browser with the latest doppler radar image. If the site is a US NWS NEXRAD weather radar, you can also specify the type of the image returned, from a choice of 6. Canadian MSC radars, identified by a three-letter callsign, do not provide this enhancement, though various other image types are available once the page has loaded.

Intellicast - A similar tool is provided for easy access to the Intellicast weather-site. One or more Map-Pins must be selected first; you can then click 'Intellicast 10 day Forecast' to open a new tool box. The line of colored spots represents currently selected Map-Pins; click one of them, and the tool will search a database of airports, returning the 5 closest to the pin-position, in order of distance. The table also shows the Distance from the chosen Map-Pin, the Callsign, Name, and the Airport Position. To the left of each entry is a small icon : plane icon Clicking on this will open a new browser with the 10 day forecast for the selected airport; once the page has opened, links to a variety of other weather resources and information for that airport are shown.

NOAA Current Weather - The 'NOAA Current Weather' tool is almost identical to the 'Intellicast 10 day Forecast' one; the difference is that once the airport-database has been queried, clicking one of the small icons : plane icon will open a new browser with weather information and forecasts for that site from the National Weather Service (NWS) website.

Automated Surface Stations - Similarly, the 'Automated Surface Stations' tool is almost identical to the 'Intellicast 10 day Forecast' one; the difference here is that once the airport-database has been queried, clicking one of the small icons : plane icon will open a new browser and retrieve the latest METAR observation for that site from the National Weather Service (NWS) website.
